So, I’ve had my nice Janome sewing machine for about 18months now. It looks lovely on my sewing desk, it can do amazing things – so I’m told! It can do great automatic buttonholes, I read once, but you see up until today I’d never tried them… I had a somewhat unsubstantiated fear of them. Maybe my sewing teacher in Form 1 & 2 may have mentioned how difficult they were to do, I don’t know, I just thought they were something I’d never do…

Until today! Today, I decided enough was enough! My favourite skirt was forever giving me embarrassing moments and all because I was too afraid to sew a decent buttonhole.

My favourite skirt is a wrap-around skirt that was fastened together with a little sew-on dome and a kilt pin – both of which were unreliable fasteners at the best of times.

Yes, a few too many embarrasing moments with this skirt!
Of course, deciding to learn how to sew a button-hole and actually doing that proved quite difficult, as I can’t find my sewing machine manual – it’s somewhere in the countless unsorted craftroom boxes. I couldn’t even find out a how-to on the internet, although I did find out which foot to use on the machine! And so, began a little comedy of errors, which I am sure would have never happened if I could find that darn book! Still, yeah, comedy of errors. I eventually figured out how the foot worked and where the buttonhole lever was – the machine told me that the stitch couldn’t be completed without it!
And then, all of a sudden I got it! Understood how it all worked! And managed to create 2 very acceptable buttonholes for my most favourite skirt in the world! She laughs manically! Yep – it has sent me mad!
And so now I know – I will be creating more things with buttonholes – It’s simple really…
